Sixes Lacrosse: The Future of the Game
Sixes is an incredibly fast-paced, compact version of lacrosse, blending the most exciting elements of traditional field and box lacrosse. Characterized by its accelerated, open style of play, Sixes features quick transitions and non-stop, high-scoring action, making it a thrilling experience for both players and spectators.
Key Features:
- Team Composition: 6 v 6 format with 10-12 players per team
- Field Size: Competitively played outdoors on a smaller field
- Positions: No specialist positions—just runners and goalies
- Game Flow: Draws occur only at the start of each half, ensuring continuous action
Why Sixes? Created in 2018, Sixes was designed to accelerate global growth, increase accessibility, and create a more balanced and inclusive version of lacrosse. It reduces the cost and complexity of participation and event staging, making the sport more approachable for new athletes while still challenging for seasoned players.
Sixes is a natural evolution of lacrosse, offering an inclusive opportunity for all existing lacrosse players and an easier entry point for newcomers. By eliminating specialty positions that often lead to competitive imbalance and featuring a physicality appealing to both men and women, Sixes has quickly gained popularity around the world.
Global Impact: Since its inception, Sixes has seen rapid global adoption, with leagues and events held at all levels. It was featured for both men and women in The World Games 2022, and the discipline is at the heart of lacrosse’s Olympic vision. The inaugural World Lacrosse Sixes Championships for both men and women will take place in 2026.
Sixes is not just a game—it’s the future of lacrosse.
